Under 10 Development Squad, Coaches, Paul Barry 087 9490177 and Kieran Jones

Playing  their 1st representative game at 11 a side, the SDFL u10s development squad took on the Kildare League last Wed evening in Peamount. . Just after  20 minutes with the game evenly matched  the SDFL broke the deadlock,  Great link up play down the right saw Thomas livingston feed Ethan Webb who calmly slotted the ball past the on coming Kildare goal keeper.  Patrick Aiken controlling midfield ,set up the second feeding the ball to Livingston , who combined  with Elliott Haran who calmly slotted  the ball past the keeper. Kidare responded well with some clever play and a cool finish, to reduce the score ,But within two minutes the SDFL sealed the victory with an  excellent Craig Brogan run and shot, well saved by the Kildare keeper, only for the alert Alex Chooi to finish of the rebound. SDFL came close to notching a forth when Matthew Hickey unleashed a pile driver only to see the ball rebound of the upright, The outstanding performance on the night was made by debutant Mickey Fegan who slotted in at an unfamiliar left full position. He defended very well and offered support as an attacking force also. SDFL Coaches Paul Barry and Kieron Jones would like to thank Kildare for a very competitive game.

Wexford Challenge Cup;

South Dublin put in a good day’s work to claim a well merited 4th spot in Bunclody on Saturday June 5th. This inaugural competition featuring teams from ddsl, Athlone, Waterford, Wicklow and Wexford hopes to build itself into a Kennedy Cup for u11’s.

Drawn in a tough group SDFL opened against All-Ireland semi-finalists Lucan United. A tight game ensued with SDFL carving out the best chances in the 1st half but Lucan dominating after the break. In the end a draw was a fair result.

Next up was Carlow and despite a sluggish start, once the SDFL lads broke the deadlock with a long range effort from Ryan Di Felice the result was never in doubt. Alex Murray grabbed a smashing 2nd and by the end SDFL had racked up an impressive total of 6.

SDFL saved their best performance for the deciding group game putting Wexford under severe pressure right from the start. Two early 2nd half goals, an o.g. and an Avis Ganily strike looked like seeing the SDFL through comfortably. However a mad 5 mins saw Wexford claim 2 goals against the run of play to boost their own chances of topping the group. However it was at this stage the SDFL showed real character and a flowing move ended with Eleanor Ryan-Doyle being in the right place at the right time to smash home the important goal and send the lads through top of the group and through to the elite play-offs.

In the semi-finals where they were to face tournament favourites, Gorey Rangers U12’s, who had just completed the double in Wexford and were destroying teams en-route to the semi’s. The SDFL put up a brave performance against a more physically imposing side but just couldn’t get the break they needed. A solitary 1st half strike was enough to put Gorey through.

So the SDFL faced Malahide United U11’s in the 3rd & 4th place play-off. Both sides made numerous changes and the game only sparked to life in the 2nd period when Malahide raced into a 2-0 lead. Again the lads dug unbelievably deep to respond with a lovely Ryan Di Felice lob and a close range Stephen Hanley effort. Just when penalties looked certain tiredness and a lack of concentration allowed Malahide to knick a goal deep into injury time.

Goalkeeper Séan Hyland had an excellent tournament and was well supported by Séan Nolan. Defenders Craig Canty (Capt) and Adam Finlan were outstanding and should have made the team of the tournament. At the back they were well supported by Jamie & Ross Broderick, Conor Geraghty & Fergus O’Rourke. In midfield Simon King, Kimolo Ndee, Adam Boland, Gavin Brady, Cian O’Brien & Jordan Cummins gave their all and were a match for any side. While the front play of Alex Murray, Stephen Hanley, Avis Ganily, Ryan Di Felice & Eleanor Ryan Doyle was a joy to watch and a constant danger to all opposing teams.

It was a tired SDFL team which returned to Ballyowen around 11pm having met up around 8am – a long but worthwhile day. The lads showed they could compete against the best at this age group and this tournament provided many lessons for our future development. Roll on next season already!

TAB Cup Squad 2010

Wicklow 0-2 SDFL (TAB Cup semi final 3/5/10)

This was a hard fought victory for the boys and every one of them played a big part in what was probably the best performance they have turned in this season. With only 5 mins gone Johnny Guy netted a fine goal on his debut, after being sent through by Byron Cunningham. After that goal Wicklow piled on the pressure but the South Dublin defence held firm. Peter Manning in goal pulled off some fine saves and received some applause from the crowd for his handling. The SDFL team continued to press when ever they had the ball, and when a lost cause was kept in play at the corner flag, Danny Kane whipped in a cross which bounced awkwardly off the keeper for the 2nd goal. That second goal seamed to kill off any resistance from Wicklow, and the SDFL were through to the final after completing  3 impressive wins on the trot.

Kildare 3-1 SDFL (TAB Cup final 3/5/10)

The game plan went out of the window after only 60 seconds as Kildare scored straight from the kick off, and David Byrne was taken off injured as well. That early goal stung South Dublin, but they settled down well and dominated the first half. Byron Cunningham hit the cross bar, and Joe Doyle struck a free kick wide, while a number of off side calls were very close, but they could not find an equaliser when they were on top. They were further made to pay for this when Kildare scored in the 2nd half. Joe Doyle pulled one back with 8 mins left and this seemed to offer the lads a chance back into the game, but their exploits of the first game were catching up with them, and they looked jaded. Kildare played the ball around well and kept possession, before they added a third when a free kick was turned in at the back post in the last minute.

The players and staff of this squad should feel happy at the progress made this season. The Cashin Cup, the trip to Limerick and now the TAB Cup have given everyone a glimpse into the requirements needed for the Kennedy Cup next season. We hope they enjoy the summer break and come back fighting fit next September. Well done everyone.

Limerick County 2-3 SDFL (16/4/10)

A game of two half’s certainly describes this game played in the fine surroundings at Charlivelle. Limerick bossed the first half and were 2-0 up at half time, before some harsh words and a couple of substitutions changed the fortunes of the under 12s. David Byrne pulled one back with a fine finish, then Byron Cunningham rounded the keeper to make the scores level. With 5 mins remaining, Cunningham scored from distance to clinch the win and send the players back to the hotel in buoyant mood.

Limerick District 0-2 SDFL (17/4/10)

The SDFL lads coped well with their tired limbs and cruised to victory in this match, to return home with a 100% record from these two games. Goals in either half from Joe Doyle and Hugh Caslin completed the scoring and they could have won by more. All in all they will be high on confidence for the TAB Cup at the end of the month.

Kennedy Cup Squad 2010

Dundalk 0-0 SDFL (21/6/10)

This opening game began at one hundred miles an hour, and a lot of early fouls were committed as both sides tackled with full commitment. A chance for Dylan Mc Keever was narrowly wide of the post, and Brian Horgan tried to lob the keeper but hit his shot too high, and it sailed over. As the first half drew to a close Dundalk launched a long ball into the SDFL box, but the danger was cleared to touch by keeper Andrew O Donnell. The second half did not see many chances either, Lee Higgins pulled one wide and a shot from Fionn Geoghegan was blocked. At the other end O Donnell touched a freekick on to the bar and then got down well to smother a toe poke that looked to be heading in. In the final minute Vincent Ogbe might have snatched it at the far post but the Dundalk keeper got down well to save at his feet.

SDFL 4-1 Kildare (22/6/10 AM)

Having lost their first game Kildare were under immense pressure to deliver, but it was the South Dublin lads who settled better and fired off a few early shots. On 15 mins Dylan McKeever was sent through and hit a shot with the outside of his foot into the net. 5 mins later Kildare were level when a long ball was missed at the back and the keeper came to collect, however he was beaten to the ball and the sides were level at half time. The SDFL found 5th gear early in the second half went Kieran Mc Namara slotted home a pen awarded for hand ball. McKeever netted his second from the edge of the box and Mc Namara spotted the keeper out of his box to fire home, 4-1. The SDFL moved into cruise control and this was a superb second half in which all players played a part. Captain Fionn Geoghegan and Hugh Hackett won the midfield battle and now it’s all to play for at 5 o Clock.

WWEC 0-7 SDFL (22/6/10 PM)

WOW! What drama. An unexpected 7-0 win for Dundalk this morning meant that the SDFL needed to win by 6 more goals than Dundalk did v Kildare, to top the group. They got off to a flyer when Mc Namara scored a pen and a freekick inside 4 mins, followed by a wonder goal from Sean Burke, to race into a 3-0 lead. But they were quickly deflated when word filtered through that Dundalk were leading 2-0. Urged on by a big vociferous crowd Dylan Mc Keever made it 4, then Craig Fitzgerald shot from 20yds to make it 5. Two more goals were needed and there was a feeling around the pitch that it could be done. Giordano Cinelli netted to make it 6, the goal difference was now level and another goal would take us top of the group. When Michael Hogan provided it from close range, the roar could have been heard back in Dublin. The players and coaches were well pleased when the whistle went, at a job well done, and while a little time was afforded to enjoy the achievement, the focus will quickly shift to tomorrow’s game.

Midlands 1-2 SDFL (23/6/10)

A tense quarter final tie started badly for the SDFL when they conceded a penalty early on. Before that Hugh Hackett could have scored from a corner but miskicked in front of goal, it was his only mistake of a magnificent performance. Vincent Ogbe equalised soon after, running on to a through ball to slot past the onrushing midlands keeper.

Within 30second of the second half Ogbe scored a carbon copy goal, and his pace & power were causing the Midlands lots of trouble. As the game moved into the final phase the anxiety and tension rose, the tackles came in thick and fast and no quarter was asked nor given. Michael Hogan headed off the line, Andrew O Donnell made a couple of smart saves and the team held out for a well deserved victory. History was made and the SDFL will contest the Kennedy Cup semi final tomorrow.

Wicklow 1-2 SDFL (24/6/10) Kennedy Cup Semi Final

A stunning first half performance from the SDFL lads should have seen the game sown up by half time. A good Wicklow side found it very hard to live with the slick passing and power of South Dublin, and an early goal from Dylan Mc Keever was well deserved. Thereafter shot after shot rained in on the Wicklow goal. Kieran Mc Namara, Sean Burke, Sean Cullen, Lee Higgins and Vincent Ogbe all saw their efforts saved by the keeper or go narrowly wide. At 1-0 the game was never over and 4 changes at half time from Wicklow saw them try to force a way back into the game. They did so when a long throw was not dealt with and Sean Hughes forced the ball home. SDFL dug deep and with 4 min remaining Mc Namara swung in a corner, Cullen headed towards goal, the ball was blocked on the line and Mikey Hogan put his head where others wouldn’t put their boots and the ball was in the back of the net! There was joyous scenes at the finish and a first ever Kennedy Cup final for the SDFL to look forward to tomorrow.

SDFL 1-2 DDSL (25/6/10) Kennedy Cup final

The biggest occasion for a SDFL representative side kicked off at 2 pm in the famous “Bowl” at the University of Limerick Campus. Joint leading scorer Kieran Mc Namara was declared unfit, after giving his all in the previous 5 games. Others were feeling tired too and the physio was kept busy before the game. It seemed that all of the neutrals present were cheering the SDFL as the game kicked off. The ddsl hit the bar early on and South Dublin responded with a couple of shots to test their keeper. After 15mins the ball was played out right, Craig Fitzgerald showed some trickery on the ball and he was through one on one with the keeper, he kept his cool to finish well and the bowl erupted. Still the SDFL continued to take the game to their Dublin neighbours, but suffered another injury blow when Lee Higgins had to be replaced. The ddsl needed to up their game in the second half, and mid way through they drew level when a free kick was headed home at the back post. Chris Gaynor & Sean Burke were out on their feet due to their efforts during the week and Gaynor also needed to be replaced. Andrew O Donnell was having an outstanding game in goal and pulled off some quality saves, but he could do nothing about the goal that came with only 7 mins left. Dylan Mc Keever went close and Vincent Ogbe fired over as a last effort to get back into the game proved fruitless. Overall the lads played 6 hours of football in 5 days and in reality it probably proved 20 mins too much, but they should all be proud of their displays this week. Well done lads.

SDFL 14s 1-1 SDFL 13s

Gareth Fox equalised from the spot midway through the second half as this evenly contested encounter ended in stale mate at Kilbogget Park. The first half was very tight and defenders were on top as the players tried hard to create chances. The older lads were slightly on top during the opening exchanges, with James Toale pulling the strings in midfield. 13s keeper Conor Makey injured himself turning a shot over the bar and was replaced by left back Kieran Mc Namara who showed good handling skills when called upon. Early in the 2nd half Chris Gaynor won the ball on the half way line and fed Ryan Forsyth, he then set up Vincent Ogbe to continue his scoring streak by firing the 13s ahead. Playing 5 in midfield the younger lads got a better grip of things and pressed forward looking to kill things off, but the 14s also tried to step up a gear and looked threatening whenever they had the ball. When the ball was knocked into the box a foul was committed and Fox showed everyone how to take a penalty when he smashed his kick into the net. Both sides had goals ruled out for narrow offsides and a draw was a fair reflection of the efforts put in by both sets of players. Afterwards the officials of host club Cabinteely FC laid on tea & sandwiches, and the SDFL would like to thank all at Cabo for their generous hospitality.
