Demonstration Night 2009

A large turn out at the SDFL Coaching demonstration night, were treated to an insight of Coaching at a very high level. The managers of league sides in the SDFL as well as the Coaches who were present, all learned something to bring back and try out on their charges. First up was Dave Foley of the SDFL staff who gave us some warm up practices. This area is often very neglected by managers of our league teams. The sight of players queuing up to take penalties as a warm up is abhorrent to any serious coach.

JJ Glynn of the FAI

After that JJ Glynn FAI regional development officer put on a session of Dribbling/running with the

ball. Players of the under 12 squad were used to demonstrate the session and afterwards spoke of how much they learned and enjoyable the session was. DoC Tommy Carberry then showed how to defend in the modern game. Starting with 1v1, and progressing to 2v2 and on to a full practice using a back 4, he showed how they could frustrate 6 attackers if they are well organised and work together.

The session put on by Niall Harrison (national coordinator of the Emerging Talent Programme) was a very enlightening one. He focused on speed of movement, speed of thought and speed of execution. Everything was done so fast that the under 13 squad he used were exhausted at the end! But again they really enjoyed the whole session, which was innovative & exciting.

Although some managers may forget about their Goalkeepers, we at the SDFL never do. Coaches Joe Donohoe & Mark Connors gave us some drills to work on to insure that our net minders can also improve their technique.

All in all there was a lot of information passed on during the sessions. The aim of these nights is to equip our managers with the knowledge required to pass on to the players, as we strive to improve standards across the South Dublin Football League. Nobody knows everything, and the league plan to hold another of these nights soon in the east Dublin area. Details will be available soon.
